Our Name

To us, good performance begins with good writing. Our performances begin with solid scripts and our school programs all have creative writing at their roots. The importance of writing is reflected in our name.

ATTIC SALT (n): Particularly acute, graceful, biting wit, as embodied in the satirical comedies of Aristophanes.
– The Dictionary of Classical, Biblical, & Literary Allusions
by A. H. Lass, D. Kiremidjian and R. M. Goldstein

Our Mission

Attic Salt is a not-for-profit company that produces theater for adult and family audiences and implements long-term residencies in schools. Whether creating original works, producing the works of others, or creating curriculum, our focus is always on building up from a solid foundation of especially strong writing.  Additionally, in our work with children, our goal is always to remind kids that creativity begins with yourself and theater is something that you can do at home.

Black Lives Matter

We at Attic Salt Theatre Company stand by the principles of and in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. As an organization, we value the talents and knowledge base of the POC actors, teachers and administrators that we’ve called colleagues and friends over the past two decades. We’re proud the decades of work we’ve done teaching students in communities of color, and the relationships we developed with The Partnership for Inner-City Schools over our many years working in New York City.

As we move forward in our current hometown of Asheville, a city still struggling with it’s racial identity and problems, we will continue to evaluate our programs and practices to ensure we our doing our best to be a thoughtful and equitable member of the Asheville theater community. We will continue to find ways to make the arts accessible to audiences, artists and educators of all colors, classes and gender identities.
