Attic Salt is a not-for-profit company that creates and implements long-term arts residencies in schools. Through academically rigorous arts programming we teach children that theater is something that they can do at home, and that creative arts can be a part of their everyday lives.
To us, good performance begins with good writing. Our school programs all have creative writing at their roots and the importance of writing is reflected in our name.
ATTIC SALT (n): Particularly acute, graceful, biting wit, as embodied in the satirical comedies of Aristophanes.

Jeff Catanese – Artistic Director
Jeff is a successful director, writer and actor and has directed several productions in New York and regionally. As an actor he has performed in over fifty theatrical productions and has had the pleasure of working with film directors Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese and Spike Lee. His plays have been performed all around New York including at the Duffy Theatre, Chicago City Limits and Pulse Ensemble Theatre. Jeff is co-author with Marci Appelbaum of three drama/education books, published by Scholastic. He teaches both acting and improvisation to people of all ages.
Marci Bernstein – Executive Director
Marci brings her background in education and theater to Attic Salt after many years of working as an actor, musician and teacher in New York City.
She has spent many years in the classroom developing programs that balance education basics with the arts. And while most of her time is spent in the classroom, she can still be found onstage as half of the children's music group Erin Lee & Marci, performing for kids all over the country. She's co-authored three books for Scholastic, Inc. with Jeff Catanese and sits on the board of directors of The Children's Music Network.
We are entirely funded by generous individual donors and grants. We are grateful to the following foundations for their recent donations that help us bring our arts programming to needy schools:
The Puffin Foundation
The Calder Foundation
The Nancy Quinn Fund
The Schubert Foundation
